How does a virus Propagate?

Hi

Could anyone explain to me exactly how a virus works,(Netsky,Bagle). I know that ity spoofs the from field making the originator difficult to track and obviously people get return messages about mails they never sent. I also believe these virus' have there own smtp engine, does this mean the virus is sent without using the mail client (Outlook, Notes).

Any help would be useful, links etc.
