Hello,

We've had 4 x 420's redundant power supply failures recently.
We know this due to the amber light on the front of the systems. The system however doesn't seem to alert this problem in any other way, eg, via prtdiag or /var/adm/messages. Does anyone know how we could be alerted to this error ?

You can check many faults including power with "SMC", Sun Management Center", or you can use prtdiag -v:
...
Fan Bank :
----------
Bank Status
---- -------
FAN [NO_FAULT]
=================================
Power Supplies:
---------------
Supply Status PS Type
------ ------ ---------------
PS0 [NO_FAULT] [Sun-Fire-280R]
PS1 [NO_FAULT] [Sun-Fire-280R]
=================================

you can also write a simple shell script to grep for "faults" on PS, and send a email when found one, or use a customize hardware monitor like BigBrother.

Regards,

Carlos Almeida,

Thanks Carlos for the info on SMC and Big Brother.
Can't however find a solaris 7 or 8 system that returns any prtdiag info about power supplies however.
