How do you track changes to your site?

Hi guys,

I am still struggling with these issues.

What is the easiest way to communicate to your users -- as well as track for yourself! -- the changes you have made, when, what, how, by whom etc?

Is there a well-known form? How do you manage your changelog?

I am looking for low-tech, zero outlay solutions, but I am also curious how the "big boys" with unlimited budgets do it.

If you're dead-set on tracking changes, then the best form is the one you'll use. There's no magic method for this nor is there a single "best form". You can have the biggest budget and the most expensive tools, but if you won't/don't use them, then it doesn't matter!

There's always a better way. The fun is trying to find it!
 
The 'big boys' normally use CMS (Content Management Systems) which provide version control, author notes, and workflow (someone writes/changes content, someone else approves it, etc...)

Personally, if I want to maintain a site history I use CVS.

CMS is not an option as we are in an organization where the addition of software virtually requires an Act of Congress.

Was hoping for a solution that used something like Excel, I suppose.
