Hi,

I am trying to use 1 printer to switch between landscape and portrait.

Does anyone know how to achieve this?

You need to set up 2 print queues, one defined for portrait, one for landscape. You can set one as the default lp.

Depending on which way you want to print you will then call that queue.

Typically I have called our printqueues "port" and "land", with "port" being the default PQ.

So to print I would do this:

lp -dport or lp = portrait mode
lp -dland = landscape mode

Hi aixmurderer,

Thanks for your reply.

These printers are ip printers ( IBM 4320's ).

Do you need to have any special settings on the print queue so each queue knows it's print port or land?

How did you set up the print queues using system V printing?

Assuming you are using AIX:

1) # smittty printer
2) Print Spooling
3) Change / Show Print Queue Characteristics
4) Enter your name at: PRINT QUEUE name []
5) Select from the popup menu: 2 Default Print Job Attributes
6) Look for the following:
------------- Paper/Page Options --------------
Page ORIENTATION portrait

F4 will list you portrait or landscape.

Hope that helps.

Hi Aixmurderer,

Thanks for your reply.

I will try this and get back to you if I have any more questions.

Hi Aixmurderer,

I have tried what you suggested but with SYSTEMV printing running you don't get the options. It doesn't even find the print queues I setup using the lpadmin & lpsystem commands.

If you have any more advise it would be appreciated.

You need to understand the 'interface' script you are using for System V printing. Forget about using SMIT for System V, it does not work for System V. I suggest you start with the /usr/lib/hpnp/HpnpIS.model script and then you should be able to control this with 'lp -o landscape'.

See: and search on printing labs and then look at the Sytem V labs. The Redbook SG24-6018-00 can also provide information on this, especially in the section on "Creating and modifying a custom interface script. The Redbook is called "Printing for Fun and Profit under AIX 5L" and was written way to fast, but has a lot of details.
