Hi Everyone,
I'm not sure if this is what I need to set, but this is my frustration... I have an eps file that I've imported into Corel, it has a very small outline around some text, all is vector art. I notice that the small outline has shifted ever so slightly up and to the right, I would like to zoom in on a small portion of the design, select the outline vector and use my arrow keys to "Nudge" the line into proper placement, but when I do this the line moves about 3 times further than I need it to, I read somewhere that you can cut the distance in half by either holding down on the shift or cntrl key (I'm not sure which one) while using your arrow keys - but it still isn't as controlled as I would like - moving it manually with the center "X" doesn't work because I have to zoom so close in the get the alignment correct that it is out of range of the center "X" handle.
I hope I've explained my delimma enough so that someone can point me or "NUDGE" ME in the right direction! :D
Thanks.

GGirl, look for this:
Tools / Options / Workspace / Edit / Nudge Box

You'll see Super Nudge there too.

Default is 0.1 inch so make it smaller.

HTH,
Jim

Look to your property bar with nothing selected - change units to mm - next to that change nudge to .1mm. This is the setting I use for those very fine adjustments.
Hope this helps.

graphicgirl,

I've used "Nudge" VERY often and find it EXTREMELY USEFUL for placement of objects in very precise positions.

You might already know this but for others who don't, the "nudge number" is not only used for "nudging" objects, but is ALSO used by "duplicate" - <Control> D - for the distance a duplicate object is placed from the original. And subsequent use of <Control> D will result in the next duplicate being placed the SAME distance from the previous duplicate.

Therefore, if one wants to set up some type of pattern or grid, the duplicate process can be VERY useful. Also, having an "easy" (shortcut key) method of changing the "nudge number" can be VERY useful. Then, one can easily use "trial and error" for the spacing between objects - to make them fit evenly across the page and/or down the page. If the spacing is not quite right, simply erase the objects, adjust the "nudge number" and repeat the duplicate process.

The "key" (pun intended) to this being a quick & easy task, is to set up a shortcut "key" (or keyboard shortcut). For the “nudge number”, I find that the best key to use is the + character on the number pad. Then, for example, you can simply hit +.01 <Enter> to set your nudge number (or nudge “offset”).

Here are the steps to follow in setting up such a keyboard shortcut.

1) First you need to place the “Nudge Offset” icon on one of your Toolbars that: a) has room, and b) will always remain an active toolbar. (There is always the option of adding a new toolbar if required.)

2) Right-click on an existing toolbar, and choose “Customize”. This should result in the “Options” window appearing, and on the left-side, under “Customize”, “Toolbars” should have a grey background.

3) On the right-side at the top it should say “Toolbars” and then “Commands” below that. Under “Commands”, scroll down to “Tools” and Double-Click.

4) Next click “Options”, and then on the right-side, you should see the “Nudge Offset” icon.

5) Click-and-drag the “Nudge Offset” icon to one of your toolbars.

6) At this point be sure to click the “O.K.” button. (If you don’t, your changes will not be saved – they’ll be “lost”.)

It seems that my version of CorelDraw has a “default” shortcut key of the + character on the number pad, so first try the + character.

If it turns out that there is no shortcut key assigned to your Nudge Offset icon, then here are the steps to assign your own key...

1) Right-click on the Toolbar.

2) On the Left-side, under “Customize”, click on “Shortcut Keys”.

3) On the Right-side, Double-Click on “Tools”, and then Double-Click on “Options”.

4) Scroll down and Click on “Nudge Offset”. On the right, look under “Current shortcut keys” to see if there are any shortcut keys assigned.

5) At the top-right, under “Press new shortcut key”, enter the key you wish to use as the shortcut. In the case of the “Nudge Offset”, I would strongly recommend the use of the number pad + character.

Reminder: Once again, don’t forget to click the “O.K.” button, or else your changes will NOT be saved.

Consider using the above procedures to set up other icons and keyboard shortcuts for other tasks or settings you find yourself wanting to change frequently or even on a reasonably often basis. Once people get used to using these keyboard shortcuts, they'll wonder “what took them so long” in beginning to use them.

Hope this helps. :)

Pressing the + key places a duplicate directly on top of the original ie 2 objects in exactly the same position. This is useful if you want to move a duplicate object left, right, up or down using the control key.

Hi Brushman,

Thanks for your input. You've reminded me that there can be a problem with NOT being able to use the number pad + character for changing the "nudge offset". This is of course because it's set up as a "default" shortcut key with some versions of CorelDraw (version 8, I believe).

Because <Control> D has always been a default option for duplicating, I've made the decision to "override" the default of the + character for duplicate (no need to have 2 options), and instead I assigned the + character to the "nudge offset" because it's right next to the numbers. This makes it VERY quick & easy to change the nudge offset.

Once users begin to change the nudge offset "frequently" and move objects with the the arrow keys (and/or duplicate with <Control> D, they will soon realize that it's a MUCH prefered option for arranging objects.

To be able to "override" the default of the + character being used for duplicating objects, you need to place the "nudge offset" icon on a toolbar that will ALWAYS remain "active". And of course you also need to assign the number pad + character to the nudge offset icon - see the steps in my posting above.

I hope this helps. :)

I use V10 so I suspect the default + key goes right through to V11. I understand your methods and reason, just thought I'd mention it as some are not keen to change defaults.

Hi all,

Just to let you know, all info offered can be used in V11.
