How do you recover from file already in use message

I was making changes to an application, cleaning out some old stuff, I can't say exactly what happened...but when I went to do a compact and repair, I received "file already in use" message. I can't even delete it and bring the back up version back.
How can I delete the file and restore the backup. Do I need admin rights or something to that degree.

Try deleting any LDB files in the same directory as your database, as they store locking/usage information and should be deleted automatically when all users are logged out of the db but if your db crashed maybe the LDB wasn't cleaned down neatly?

There's no LDB file in the directory.
