I hadn't thought about it until I read this ABC News article

Now I'll have to listen to the news reporters to see if they say it correctly.

Nice find!

We should keep track of local news for a week and count the number of improper pronunciations.

I've probably pronounced Iraq every which way possible, including "eye-ra[blue]n[/blue]."

And since I am not particularly adept at generating or hearing vocal nuances, I'm not altogether sure I can say "ae-rock." Hell, when I say "pen" and "pin" you can't tell the difference.

I'll try to remember to say "ee-rock" and be satisfied with that.

Or course, if the violent extremists were to overwhelm the fledgling democracy and continue to blow up their own country, it might become the Islamic State of Rubble (pronounced "eye-sore").

I certainly pronounce this 'ee-rack' and never 'eye-rack' but it doesn't annoy me anywhere near as much as hearing people say 'aye-dolf' rather than 'a-dolf'

Ir-raq" as in "irregular"
Damn those badgers! They just will not cooperate.
Now, is it "A" merica, or "Ah" merica? France, or Frawnce?

It's more like ear-rack. Not to be confused with ear wax. Both ARE pretty sticky, though.

ih-raq as in idiot. it should also be ih-ran and in India Italy.

I agree with the ay-dolf, drives me nuts.

One that drives me crazy is Oregon, pronounced Or-ee-gun, NOT Or-a-gone

Another one that drives the locals crazy is pronouncing Pierre, South Dakota like some French guy. The correct pronunciation is "peer".

So why not just spell it "peer" if that's the way it's supposed to sound? Seems the locals ougta take a vote on it, and make it a done deal, so as to no more confusion. [wink]

Wasn't it named after some French guy?

Per Wikipedia, Pierre, South Dakota was "founded in 1880 on the Missouri River opposite Fort Pierre".

While the history of the name of the city is not mentioned, it's reasonable to draw the conclusion that it has something to do with the nearby fort.

Again, according to Wikipedia, Fort Pierre "derives its name from Pierre Chouteau, Jr., a fur trader who established the fort."

While no date is listed for when the fort was founded, it's a reasonable assumption that it was prior to 1880, as Pierre Chouteau, Jr. died in 1865. It's highly unlikely he founded the fort as a zombie, but Wikipedia made no mention of this one way or the other.

In summary, it's reasonable to conclude that Pierre, SD was, in fact, named after "some French Guy". (Although technically, he was American, but of French descent.)

I happen to think that the pronunciation of "Peer" comes from our lazy American tongues bastardizing it over time. However, this is based off nothing more than personal conjecture.

A fur trader?

I knowed any fella named Pierre had to be a fureigner. [bigsmile]
