recently purchased a speaker phone with light for voicemail, it is an sbc-125.

voicemail light doesnt seem to work, go to sbc site and it says it is centrex compatible. nothing about nortel.

so is it that the sbc-125 phone is not compatible with the nortel system?

I guess I should have checked first, but the phone was really cheap, and someone had even brought in a wal-mart phone recently (durabrand) and the voicemail light on that one worked with our system, so I thought I had a good chance.

oops, should have said the voicemail system was VMX

Does the phone work on your system?

This is a Signature and not part of the answer, it appears on every reply.

This is an Analogy so don't take it personally as some have.

Why change the engine if all you need is to change the spark plugs.

Nortel uses proprietary phones, any analog device should work with any PBX, not digital. If your SBC-125 is digital, it most likely won't work. post your. tn of this set

phone works fine, everything except for the voicemail indicator light.

this is an analog set, line is analog.

we only have a handful of digital lines. those are in the front office. I'm out in the boondocks :)

THAT IS AN ANALOG PHONE, IS THE ANALOG CARD A MESSAGE WAITING CARD

OLD ROLMEN WORKING ON NORTELS

When you have a message and you pickup the handset, do you get Stutter dialtone? if you do you need to change the CLS to LPA.

no, no stutter.

I have a nortel phone on my desk that I use, has light for voicemail, works fine, so I am just swapping this phone for mine for testing purposes.

I have a blinking light when I plug in the nortel phone, but when I plug int he sbc phone the sbc phone doesnt blink, so it shouldnt be a setting (or so I would think)

The SBC 125 may use a different way to activate the lamp. If you really want to use the new phone but also want to see the lamp, get a splitter and use both phones.

I was just testing this phone to see if we could use it in place of the nortel phones we usually purchase.

the sbc phone was cheaper than the nortel phones we usually get, and the speakerphone capability seemed to work better, but if the voicemail indicator light will not work I will just stick with the nortel phones.

The key here is that the unit is "Centrex Compatible". Centrex signaling is somewhat different from standard Analog for certain functions. With standard Analog, such as Nortel uses, a voltage is sent up the line to enable the MW lamp. Centrex sends an actual command to the phone to light/extinguish the MW lamp, much like Nortel does with digital sets.

I have attached a link to the User's Guide for the SBC-125. Please note on page 4, the Features List, that there is an asterisk by the Message Waiting Lamp entry and that the asterisk means it's for a function that requires telco service subscription.

I know of no way to make a Nortel PBX emulate Centrex signaling. If there is hopefully someone will post how to do it.

You could use this phone on your switch but you would require a CLASS Modem Card XCMC (NT5D60) card in your system.
The XCMC provides the special signalling that hhallett mentioned.

ah,thanks for the info.

probably not worth saving 20 bucks on a phone if you have to go thru all that.
