How Do You Insert New Detail Sections?

I am new to Crystal, and immediately having problems adding a new Detail section to my report.

I tried right clicking on the detail section and selected "Insert Section Below". This splits by detail into 2 sections: Detail A and Detail B.

Unfortunately, when I go to preview, the report is mixing the data in section B with section A data. I want section A data to stay together. Can anyone help?

What exactly do you mean by "mixing" section a and b data? Are you hoping to print all section A data and then all section B data? It doesn't work that way. Each section is still referencing the same single row of data, so it will always print a,b,a,b etc.

I think you should describe what you are trying to do and also show some sample detail level data, with fields labeled--before it is broken out and then show a sample of how you would like it to look.

Sorry for being so vague. The problem is in the design field, the detail section is small, and I don't have room to drag all my database fields vertically. I tried adding a new detail section to fit my other fields in it.

If I try stretching out the detail section, it creates huge spaces between each record.

Stretching out the detail section wouldn't create extra white space between records unless you have some fields with no data.

You can place each field that you want in a vertical position in its own detail section and then format each detail section to "suppress blank section" in the section expert. If there is null data, the section won't appear at all.

Hey LB,

I created some screenshots to illustrate the problem I am talking about. I even tried taking out New Retirees since there are zero records in some fields, but it still creates the large blank lines between each record.

So frustrating, this should be easy to do, and every tutorial only shows adding fields horizontal across the detail section!

None of your views show inserted detail sections. It looks like you might have inserted lines instead. You can right click on the gray area to the left of the detail section->insert section below. You should then see detail_a and detail_b. Or if it's easier, you can go into the section expert and insert sections. In design mode, you would place the fields in the desired section and then resize them so that the detail section borders hug the top and bottom of the field.

Hey LB,

Your suggestion actually brings me back to the original problem when I tried to just insert a new detail section. Crystal still mixes the sections together.

I can't understand why in the world someone would want this, much less a default option. If I had new data in section B, it is going to appear mixed in with section A.

Here is a screenshot showing what I am talking about. Notice my data now has blank rows again.

You obviously didn't put any fields INTO detail_b. What kind of a display are you expecting? I don't follow what you mean by 'mixing' detail a and b--or what kind of display you are really after?
