The Entire Network section of network neighbourhood allows anyone to look at other workgroups on the network. Is there any way of hiding this or removing it or whatever?
Paulovey speaks truly here. The policy editor can be used to your disadvantage, forcing a reinstallation of the OS (if you can't start Windows or run any application it's pretty tough to run poledit.exe to correct your mistakes.
I saw an admin make the same mistake on a stand-alone machine and it prompted me to write a DOS-based application to handle the most common policy settings. The advantage is that it doesn't require Windows to run (it could even run from a bootable floppy).
No, I'm not trying to sell it. You can test it for free. All that I ask is that you don't redistribute it and that you give me plenty of feedback.
If you had to create the key, create the name "NoEntireNetwork"
Set the data type to DWORD
Set the value to 00000001
...but I don't recommend it. Regedit is about as user-friendly as poledit. The usual cautions apply: backup the registry, etc, etc, and play with it at your own risk. Regedit is a dangerous place to experiment.
The regedit solution was as you said a quick fix and is currently doing the job more than adequately. I am looking at using your software to block access to other areas and it looks to be effective at first glance.
NOTE I found that
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network got me to the required area then under Edit "NEW" "DWORD value" enter "NoEntireNetwork" and press "Enter" then right click on NoEntireNetwork and set the numeric value to 1 or 0 as required.
