I just put a formatted seagate laptop drive into a external USB 2.0 case and can not get any access to it under win2k pro. It is only in the control panel hardware drive list as usb2.0 storage device. I cannot see it using the disk manager tool, and it does not get assigned a drive letter.
It is the same thing on 3 different win2k systems. What am I missing here?

I don't use W2K but I believe they have to have later service packs to recognise USB external drives (mass storage devices) SP4?? or whatever the latest one is now for W2K OS.
Also the drive needs to be set as master.

Not sure if it helps but I had a similar problem but under XP Pro after installing SP2.

An external YSB drive would not be seen in Explorer/My Computer although it is seen in devices.

I used Partition Magic to force it to assign drive letter to it and now it automatically sees it every time it is plugged in.

Is the drive Partitioned atleast?...Formatted?

Is your current disk FAT32?
That would explain the issue if the external drive is NTFS.

Grasping at straws....

Just ot throw it out there are their any drivers available for the device? the reason I ask is I have that same problem and it was resolved when I installed the drivers. I know driver aren't supposed to be necessary but it can definitely help. Just a thought though...

I am waiting for a IDE to Laptop drive converter cable so I can reformat the drive using NTFS, it is Fat32 now. I tried the device driver disk and no help there. Maybe a Fdisk and reformat under win2k will finally work. I'll keep you posted after I reformat. Thanks for the advice everybody.
