How do you extrude in Adobe Illustrator

I have run into a bit of a snag. I am trying to type something with the "superman" effect. The best way to get the desired effect is to extrude, dropping a shadow is an option but can get messy.

So simply put could any please tell me how to extrude in Adobe Illustrator cause Adobe offers up absolutely no help on the subject.
