I have a problem with detatching an xref in my dwg.
I can unload it, but it won't allow me to detatch it?
The dwg file is very large due to the xref and is slowing things down considerably!

It says "unable to detatch. multiple references detected"

What causes this, and how can I resolve it?

There are a couple of reasons.
1) The most simplest and basic reason, which I am sure you probably know. Are you trying to detatch a nested xreference? Becasuse you wont be allowed to do so.
2) Another possible reason is corrupted, nested drawing files. Once I have run a recover, then just out of habit folllow that with an audit, I can then detatch.
3)The most probable reason is straight from the Autodesk website:
This error can occur when you try to detach an xref that is used in multiple layouts. For example, you might have referenced the same title block into multiple layouts.

To detach an xref that exists in multiple layouts:

-In each layout, erase the object representation of the xref you want to detach.
-From the Insert menu, choose Xref Manager.
-In the Xref Manager, detach the xref.

Hope this helps. I have run across all three of the above int the past.
