For some time, I have been trying to find a way to add new users to Informix Universal Server running on Linux.
Is this as simple as inserting rows into the sysusers table or is there a more established way of doing this?
As far as the Informix Docs are concerned, this would appear to be a very well kept secret.

Hi Gary:

I'm not certain what you are asking. You don't add users to IDS as you add users to unix/linux.

You can control priveleges to certain users; To use the grant/revoke commands, the user doesn't have to be "added". Perhaps I'm missing something?

Thanks for your reply.

So, in actual fact- becasue there are already several users defined on the unix system, these are all potential Informix users(?)
Presumeably though, I need to GRANT various priviledges to allow these users to use the database?

Gary:

Good! We are on the same wavelength. Yes, you do need to GRANT these users priviledges to the various database objects (i.e. tables, stored procedures, views, etc. That is unless somebody has granted DBA to public. - Not a good idea)

Incidentally, the you can grant priviledges to a user without said user, yet being assigned to your OS.

Ed
