IS-IT--Management
I have verizon DSL.
--POTS LINE-->DSL MODEM-->Linksys Router-->Laptop
My original setup:
When my DSL modem (Westell 2200) was acting like a gateway. The DSL modem would get the routable IP address and the ethernet was preconfigured as 192.168.1.1. The DSL modem has a DHCP server. When I hooked up my Linksys RT31P2, it got a 192.168.1.2 address on the its WAN port from the DSL modem's DHCP server. I changed the Linksys inside IP address schema to 192.168.111.1 so that I could get on the Internet. I was able to access the Westell modem's ethernet interface for management since the DSL modem's ethernet interface was in the same network as the my Linksys router's WAN interface.
New configuration:
The old config didn't work for me. The Linksys router has the ability to do DDNS registration. I like this feature but it wasn't working properly because my DDNS registration would be the non-routable IP address (192.168.1.2) that I leased from the Westell 2200. I put my DSL modem in bridge mode so that my RT31P2 will get a routable IP address on the WAN interface. I changed the inside IP address schema to 192.168.111.1. My DSL modem's IP address for management is 192.168.1.1. My linksys device got the routable IP address on the WAN interface (70.x.x.x) and my DDNS registrations worked properly. The problem is I can no longer access the management interface for the Westell 2200 (IP address 192.168.1.1). I tried to add a static route using the Advanced Routing so that the router knows that the 192.168.1.x network is directly attached to the WAN interface side, but I can't seem to get this to work. Normally, i would put the WAN interface IP address as the gateway address, but the address keeps changing because the router reboots when you update the routing table. When the router reboots the PPPoE connection is reset and I get a new IP address.
Question:
How can I route 192.168.1.x out the WAN interface no matter what the WAN IP address is so I can manage my Westell 2200 DSL modem?
I am a network engineer by trade. Explaining all this in an e-mail is a bit difficult, so I tried to put as much detail as possible in it.
It is what it is!!
