how do i use the magic wand tool?

hi, newbie here...

I want to whitened the background of a photograph, i've read it on the web that will need to use the magic wand tool, to first select the object.... but i can't even get the magic wand to select anything...

can anyone give me some step by step guide?

please help, thank u!
 
I think you need Photoshop! The magic wand tool is second tool down on the right hand side of the tools pallette. You can change the tolerance in the toolbar at the top, and a useful command is select > similar if it's an image with areas of flat colour.

Takes a bit of practice, though, so don't expect it to be totally straightforward.
