So I am a total newbie to Windows Server anything. We are using server 2003. Now on all of our desktops (totally Windows XP) we use Group Policy editor, to change some specific about the machine.

ie, where windows updates are found, what the proxy is, etc.

What sucks is we have to do this to each individual machine when we set it up. I need to change one option in all of the machines, but I am not really interested in walking to the 200+ machines and changing this variable individually.

This is where I read about Group Policy Management Console. I am not really sure how to use it. How to import the setting I want into it, and then deploy them across the network. Can anyone help me in understanding how this works?

We are on one domain, and all of the computers would get the same Group Policy change.

I am going to start reading in a few minutes, I just want to make sure that the scenario I describe is possible.

Yes thats what GPMC is for. [Now your going to get lazy]
You can set user or computer GPO's, run scripts, install .msi apps.

So I have read it, i am little confused, but need to play around with it more.

Quick question. Is it possible to import the Group POlicy from one of my desktops to the GPMC?

ok, so i am figuring this out, but I have another question.

on Workstation X I have the itranet location for windows update set to \\Computer1

Now in GPMC I have changed itranet location for windows update to \\Computer2

Which one wins out? Well the server side GPMC trump what is set on the local machine?

The Group policy from the server will win, GP's process in a specific order;

Local, Site, Domain, OU

Read more about that here;

If there are no stupid questions, then what kind of questions do stupid people ask? Do they get smart just in time to ask questions?

Hello,

I have a network domain and am obviously using the Group Policy Object across the domain. The problem is I cannot get my policies to push across the network, even when going into cmd and typing the Gpupdate /Force.

I am not sure why this is not working.. Can you guys give me some assistance?

Thanks so much,

Mike

You can email me too.

mfoland So if you go to the client Start -> Run gpupdate /force the policy is not applied?
Did you run rsop.msc to check this?
or Start -> Run -> cmd /k gpresult
