like many others my isp (rcn) has blocked port 80
now no one can access my site.
i put listen statements in the httpd conf file for port 8080
and added a virtual server statement pointing to that port
but still no one can access the site from the internet.
if i put i can access the site.
can some one please layout the exact method to redirect to a different port
so that internet users do not have to put in the port number.
is this even doable.

You can re-direct with any registrar in this manner.

True, but only if you're registrar offers this option. Many don't, which is why I suggested Zoneedit, as you can do it for free with them.

Register.com also lets you do this.

Thanks for all of your helpful info.
Register.com says they only support port 80,
and i dont think i want to trust a uknown company with my personal info and web content, so i dont think i'll use zoneedit. I know there is a way to do this using two apache servers but i guess i won't be able to figure it out.
tzo.com is the company i use in order to host my site at home with a dynamic ip.
They say that they can redirect to another port but they will charge 99 bucks for a years service.
Oh well you cant win them all.

Zoneedit is not exactly "unheard of" and they don't have anything to do with your web content. There are just a Free DNS service. You point you domain name to your ip and that's about it. You also have the option of web or mail forwarding with cloaking so nobody will know that is being hosted at long.urls.are us.com. You can use roundrobin incase one server goes down. There is a lot more and it's all free for up to 5 zones (domains). It wouldn't hurt to at least check them out.
