i am ne to linux. a friend just gave me a linux 8.0 distribution and i installed it on an old laptop. I am trying to update via teh RHN network. I regustered a username and logon in the website, but i do not know how to register just my system. It looks like it costs money, but would prefer to not pay if i do not have to.

First course of action I would suggest is to download something much more recent.
Fedora Core 4 perhaps? RedHat 8.0 is very old and a little buggy.
Then I would suggest a fresh install of FC4. You could try to upgrade but I wouldn't recommend it.

Trojan.

ok, i'll see if that works

You can use to find other disros. However, you said it's an older laptop. What are the specs?

Some Linux distros (RedHat, Fedora, Mandrake, etc) suggest higher specs than an old laptop could have.

I agree.
Most current popular distributions will need 128 MB or more.
A older one or a distribution build for this issue might be more appropriate.

Of course it depends on what you like to do with that linux.
To teach yourself linux a recent distribution makes much more sense, than an old one.
For running some well-known programs which don't need to have the latest security-patches an old distribution may be fine.

Perhaps upgrading the RAM is an option too.

I may suggest ubuntu which you may download for free and which is even shipped without fee per snail-mail.
It took three weeks to get the 5x2 disks, which is a kind of debian System.
