I am new to Mac, and have one at my new job. We just upgraded the op sys. from 9.1 to Panther. Now both systems are on there I want to uninstall 9.1. How do I do that?

If you are certain you want to remove OS9, simply go to the hard drive root and trash the 'System Folder'.

If you delete this folder, you lose the ability to run Classic applications in your new OS. Unless you have a real reason to rid yourself of OS9, I would keep OS9 and update to the current version (9.2.2).

OS9 and OSX can easily co-exist on your computer.

Please define classic applications? The reason I ask is that since I installed Panther, the printer is not working yet and I tried to install the driver for it that is for both OS 9.1 and Panther op. systems and when I tried to install it again for the Panther it wanted to run in "Classic" mode. So I downloaded a new driver and it still wanted to run in "Classic" mode. That is irritating and one of the reasons why I want to uninstall OS 9.1 it.
All the Applications that I want to use are compatible with both op. sys. But it seems that they are not recognizing OS Panther. If I trash the OS 9.1 system folder will it also trash my apps too?

What printer are you using? Some printer manufacturers are claiming they have OSX software but it is really running in Classic mode.

If you are confident that you have no use for Classic applications, then there should be no problem with trashing the folder. You might want to burn a back-up of the 'System Folder' to a CD in case you want to reinstall it later.

Ok I am at work and trying to trash the os9 system folder and the error I am getting is "The operation cannot be completed because item "System Folder" is required by the System". and yes it is the OS 9 system folder.
What do you suggest?

Have you booted into OSX? Is the Classic system currently running on OSX? You can check this in the System Preferences window of OSX.

A system folder can not be trashed while it is functioning.

I have tried dumping the OS9 system on previous versions of OSX. The newest flavor may not allow this.

I don't know if it is running, all I see is panther unless I try to access an older program then I get that classic mode crap that comes up.
So am I stuck with it?
In the windows world it would be similar to running XP and having Windows 98 always popping up. VERY ANNOYING

You can tell if OS9 is running if you go to System Preferences and click on the Classic/OS9 icon

You can check this in the System Preferences window of OSX.

If you are annoyed with the pop-up Classic window, you can hide it with this same preference pane.
