Hello! I am a teacher who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I am having some strange behavior in my machine running windows xp sp1 since directX 9 was installed on it. I want to make sure this is the problem and for that I need to uninstall it.
So, the question is easy (I hope the answer too)
How do I uninstall directX 9 from Windows XP sp1 so I can go back to directX 8.1?
Well, I will be expecting your valuable help. Thank you very much.

There is a program that does that and uses your original Windows XP cd to re-install DirectX 8

You can get the program from: (the site is in German, but the file is in english).

Extract the files in the .zip file to C:\DXTEMP. You must extract these files to this directory and run
the UnDx9.bat that uninstalls the DirectX files in SAFE MODE.

To get into safe mode you press F8 just before the Windows XP boot screen (the screen when you start up your computer, with a 3-block bar scrolling accross your screen with Windows XP in big letters above it). The boot key sometimes varies from computer to computer, but F8 is the default, when you press it at the right time, you should get a list of choices. Choose Safe Mode out of the list, go to C:\DXTEMP (where you extracted the files) and run UnDx9.bat to unistall DirectX9.

I haven't tried this myself, so I can't walk you through it fully. Read the IMPORTANT.txt file that comes in the .zip file
Let me know how it goes!

The answer sadly, is with great difficulty as there is no uninstall with the program.

If you have installed it very recently you might be able to use System Restore to remove the installation.

Repairing Windows has the side effect of removing SP1 and all Windows Updates, it might therefore also remove DirectX.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

You may have some luck at Goggle chasing up a specific uninstaller.

A clean install would definitely remove it and revert to the original installation.

It was a late star, but you deserved it.

That didn't solve my stalling problem that i presumed it was from directX, but i was wrong.

Another istallation of my system i must do now.

But, it really uninstalled DirectX 9, and replaced it by the 8.1.
