I loaded word docs in sp and they became read-only. They were created by me, I was logged in as myself and on my pc. If I look at the properties, read-only is not checked off. Does anyone know how I turn that off? I use SharePoint '03. thank you

Did your application crash? If it did then it's some how cached. I've it happen different ways but that is one of them.

Do you use the context menu to check out the document?

thank you for getting back to me. Yes, I checked out the document. I also tried without checking out the document. Either way, it was read only. I don't believe the application crashed as I was on it most of the day and didn't have other problems. However, I will look into that.
