how do i totally remove a device from SCO 5X?

Depends.
If the new thing has the same driver and scsi id etc., you don't need to do anything.
If it isn't, you still really don't need to do anything more than remove it from /etc/conf/cf.d/mscsi and relink: if nothing tries to access the node, you'll never even see an error message.
But if you like to be neat, the general procedure is at and
