You can do it session-by-session by using the Session (Alt-S) link on the Gnome logon screen. I think that there is a way to change it permanently at that point.
in your .Xclients-default file in your home directory replace the
exec gnome-session with
exec startkde
This will work with All red hat versions and should work with all Linux versions that are running an X server. It is the X server that sets up your windows and you can choose your windows manager or desktop enviorment by the
.Xclients-default configuration file.
