I have a file with rec length of 2096.
I can "more" the file but would like to "grep" it.
How can I split a file vertically ie selecting each record bytes 1-1000 only
(Note ; not lines 1-1000 but bytes or columns)

Or user perl to do the grep:

perl -n -e 'print if /regex/' | more
