How to I specify drop caps in HTML/CSS? (Drop cap is the large first letter of a paragraph, that normally takes up physical space in two lines. It gets imbedded partially or preferable completely in the paragraph).

I've tried to simulate this by changing the font size of the first character, but I wind up with extra white space between that line and the following line. And the character appears only in the first line, instead of taking space in two lines, as standard drop caps do.

So is there a normal way of specifying the drop caps?

Thank you.

Google html css drop caps for a large number of examples.

You could try the psuedo selector :first-letter but I'll bet my lunch that IE doesn't support it.

A quick Google turned this up, which looks quite thorough
