I recently installed red hat 7. im not a linux expert and only understand basics about the os. I have two computers in my house, both run Windows 98 and are linked directly using a BNC cable and 3Com 3c509 Network Cards. On one machine i installed red hat 7.

I want to know if linux, red hat 7, has somthing simular to network neighbour hood. when i am in linux, i want the other computer to be able to read and write from my hard drive. And is it also possible to have an interent connection sharing type software which allows my other computer to connect to the internet through my linux machine. Thanks in advance for help.

Hey Shmail,

If you want the 98 machine to be able to connect to the linux box, you need to install and configure Samba on your linux box. It's not a very difficult install but the most common snag I've seen is not configuring it to use encrypted passwords. There's a line in the config file that isn't enabled by default. You will need to enable the use of encrypted passwords AND then use the smbadduser and smbpasswd utilities to create the Windows accounts and set the passwords to match the Windows versions. Outside of this, it's not difficult to get running.

To let the other computer access the Internet through your linux box, you'll need the linux box to run a proxy server. I believe Squid is what you'll want to use for this. I've never done anything with it but I'm sure you can find some how-to's on setting it up.

Good luck,
GJ
