I have a network with 24 users and 18 pc's. I am running Windows 2000 server and the majority of the pc's are 2000 with a few 98's. I want to set up a way for users to log onto the network and be able to access their 'my documents folder" stored on the server.

any suggestions would be appreciated.

Under AD, set the users home directory to their folder on the server. This will map a drive whenever they logon to any machine.

Make a shared folder on the server called profiles.. inside that folder make a foldername for everyone of the users on your network. go to the workstation and login the user. go to Control Panel and go to users... and copy the profile to the shared folder of that user on the server. (do with all users) Then on the server in Active Directory Users and Computers go to each user... and in the Profiles Tab type in //servername/profiles/username. and then log the user back in... but keep in mind that the users profile is already on the LOCAL MACHINE... not the domain so login as Admin on the local machine and copy the profile to the server.

Correction?
In the server profiles area you would want to make sure you use '%username%', as it would create the name of the client you already assigned.

Question:
What types of security settings do you put on the profiles folder? Seeing as how clients have to access it (but under Authenticated Users?) and the system has to access it, and Administrator have to... adminster it. Or did I just answer my own questions? J.R. Juiliano

Question. What items of the roaming profile work on the 98 machines. Desktop? Programs? Internet settings? etc. I have used roaming profiles on our 2000 machines and I know what settings carry over but I've never figured out what the 98 roaming profiles do.

I set up a shared folder on the server and named it Profiles.

I then changed the profile path to \\servername\profiles\%username%.

Then I logged onto the local computer (as administrator) and copied the local user profile to \\servername\profiles\username.

When I logged onto a new computer I get an error about the "user environment" that said:
Windows cannot locate your roaming profile. Changes tot he profile will not be propagated to the server. Network path was not found.

when I checked the user profiles the test user was listed as roaming.

What step am I missing?

I've got the same problem, I'm using \\servername\profiles\%username%" and I'm getting the same error in Pro when I attempt to log on. Does anyone have a solution?

Me too. Same problem although slighly different. My error sometimes tells me of the network path but also tells me that my system made an attemtp to compromise security. Any one have any suggestions for this. the roaming profile worked twice and them started with these errors.
