I have downloaded and installed the ISC DHCP server from the ISC ftp site (ftp.isc.org/isc/dhcp), and installed it (somewhat) successfully- meaning no errors popped up during or after install. However, when I run /usr/sbin/dhcpd it does not indicate any errors, but just says "exiting". That's it, and it is definitely not giving out IP addresses. I have created the dhcp.conf file, and the file for the leases. I am using inetd, if that matters, and have run the command route add -host 255.255.255.255 dev xl0, and it gave no errors, stating that the route was added. I am using Windows clients, they can ping the server with a static IP so connectivity is definitely not an issue. The readme file that came with it does give much info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Never mind, I figured this one out. Just in case anyone else has the same problem, in the how-to I downloaded for this , it stated you don't have to enter an entry for dynamic dns, but this is not true. You must give a value for how it updates dns, I used ad-hoc,and everything is fine, even though I am not even using DNS yet.
I added this line to the dhcpd.conf file:
ddns-update-style ad-hoc
There are two possible update styles, I can't remember what the other one is, you'd have to go to (they make it). I think this is the second post where I've answered myself, oh well if someone else has the same problem I hope they spot this!
