Numlock is on when I start the PC, but switches itself off at random. This seems to happen on most PCs

Is there any way of having it permantly set to on.

Using Windows XP Pro and the regedit\control panel\keyboard\startup value is set to 2

Any ideas would be appreciated

Thanks

That's strange....

It's on at boot, and stays on, then just *randomly* shuts off?

when your computer starts up, push del to enter the start-up opitions...go to advanced bios features and go to boot-up num lock status and enable it :-D

a script maybe

Code:
'0 - All Keys off
'1 - Caps Lock On
'2 - Num Lock On
'4 - Scroll Lock On
'For multiple keys, add their values:
'3 - Caps Lock and Num Lock On
'5 - Caps Lock and Scroll Lock on'
'6 - Num Lock and Scroll Lock On
'7 - Caps Lock, Num Lock, and Scroll Lock On
'Log off and back on again for the changes to take place.
Dim Wshshell:Set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
KeysPath = "HKCU\ControlPanel\Keyboard\"
WSHShell.RegWrite Keyspath & "InitialKeyboardIndicators ","2","REG_SZ"

Thank you everyone!

I have checked the bios and num lock is enabled.

Num lock comes on ok when the PC starts up, the problem is getting it to stay on without it switching itself off whilst I am working.

(Is there a keyboard shortcut that switches it off that I could be hitting by mistake?)

I haven't found a pattern for when it goes off. (I have just tried using remote desktop and it didn't affect it).

Thanks for all the suggestions - keep them coming!

Have you tried another keyboard, just to see if it is keyboard related...

Are you part of a domain. Sometimes (as has been known to happen on our network), the logon process has a setting to turn the numberlock off as you log on. There is probably a registry setting that can be changed.

It seems to be affecting several machines, so I have always assumed it isn't hardware, but I will give a different keyboard a try.

We are not part of a domain, we are on an ageing Netware network (unfortunately)
