how do i set index.html to be the default webpage in any directory?

i want to type this address:

http://www.daniel.com/hosting

and want it to take me to

http://www.daniel.com/hosting/index.html

if i'm in the wrong forum, where do i post?

how do i set index.html to be the default webpage in any directory? what if i wanted to redirect a page to another page without using server-side scripting, how can i do this with the server?
