I've got a sp6a nt4 box that has developed a message after booting up which says

"The file system structure on this disk is corrupt, please run chkdsk on the corrupt volume"

this appears at the same time as the ctrl+alt+delete prompt and I can't get past it.

Is there a way of running up NT in DOS mode ? or any other way of trying to recover the disk ??

any help much appreciated !!

thanks
Roddy

If you can login, right click on the disk in my computer choose properties, tools and check disk for errors. Tick the "Check for bad sectors" and click OK. System will tell you it needs exclusive access and can't run now, but will run at next startup.
Shutdown computer and reboot and let the checker run as the system starts up.

I can't even login unfortunately :-(

the machine is on a different site so not too easy to play with. I was thinking of trying to boot up in VGA mode but I'm not sure how successful that may be - I'll find out tomorrow.

failing that, any other ideas ?

slave the drive to another machine?

If you've got a win2k or XP install disk handy, you can run recovery console (it also works on NT installations) - which has got its own version of chkdsk.
