Running Win XP Pro on NTFS and Win98se on fat32 on a maxtor 60gb 5400 RPM HD. Was using BootMagic 7. Was running Nortons antivirus 2004 pro when I just turned the computer off. When I tried to start the computer, bootmagic would come on the screen but it would just freeze. After a few more attempts to reboot, bootmagic would not load and I would get something about sector not found but I did not write the info down.
now it will not boot at all, says no OS
put it as a slave on another computer with the master(different HD) running win xp pro ntfs. Boots up with the (Western Digital) master drive win xp pro
Using Win explorer, it sees the "bad maxtor" as two drives, drive E and Drive F. I can see the drive F (partition)that has win98se and can access it. I already took all data that I need out of it, so I can reformat that partition if necessary.
I can see the drive E (partition) that has win xp pro but when i click on it, windows says drive is not formatted and if i want to format it now. i would rather access it and save the data before i format it.
Any ideas on how to do that? or what software can help me recover it?
thanx in advance

I ran partition magic 7 and this is what it says:
ERROR: disk 2 (58619mb 7940c 240h 63s) appears to have partitions created using a different drive geometr ( 255H 63s). this serious problem can lead to data loss. no partition manipuation should be made to this disk using this product..etc. you should back up the date on this disk.....
well if i can access it, how can i back the data up?
thanx

Sound like you may need a data recovery app - Google will find you plenty (eg, - you'll probably need a commercial one (free one here - but no good with ntfs when partition table problem - which sounds like you may have -
Suppose you can't run chkdsk on it while connected as slave if it doesn't see it as formatted.

What about trying to run recovery console with drive in its own machine? (see if the XP install CD can find it - if it can, you could run a repair reinstall)?

You could also try writing a new master boot record to it (I think boot magic updates the mbr - so could be worth trying) - boot from win98 boot floppy and run fdisk /mbr.

Difficult call, as don't know what's actualy caused the 'geometry' problem.
