I deleted a users account from Exchange administrator a few weeks ago. Now I need to get an email from a few months ago. I do daily backups. Does anyone know what file and path I need to go to for this. any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Using Backup Exec 7 with the Exchange agent, just recatalogue the tape and drill down through the Exchange private information store.

How do I know if I have the Exchange Agent? I am not sure if I do. Thanks.

On the back up or restore screen do you just see drives letters or do you see the "Microsoft Exchange Information Store" or similar 3 times?

Drives only - restore priv.edb, pub.edb and dir.edb from tape back to the mdbdata folder. Then run isinteg -patch to reindex. Cross fingers, restart services.

Exchange agent - restore those 3 components. Restart services.

Restoring the .edb's can bring problems using Backup exec. I did this once and loss all my information as the priv.log, pub.log and dir.logs all corrupted the .edb files. Even isinteg would not fix the probs and this meant I could not re-start my Exchange services. Hopefully you have the Exchange agent running and you can see Exchange mail boxes as an option in Backexec restore. If you have let me know the process to restore mailboxes is long winded.

Syn,

Your last sentence - what does it mean?

After the restore using the agent you do just restart the services don't you?

Last Sentence - If sierrapeac has got the Exchange mailboxes option in Backup Exec I will talk him through the restore process. ( Forgot the ,'s )

With starting services, yes, thats all you need to do, but when I tried this I had failures due to .edb errors. I searched Microsoft KB on the errors codes and they said that the log files created with the restore can cause corruptions to the .edb ( Don't ask me how ). They recommend deleting the logs and trying again. This still did not work. In the end I re-installed Exchange and did each mailbox I needed instead of the all the .edb's. There are some things that need to be done before mailboxes can be restored to over come 'access denied' errors.

I'm getting access denied errors now (I'm trying this as we speak). How do I get around them?

This first this is to make sure that your exchange administration account has admin rigths for your organisation, site and server. Next, make sure that the account you use for exchange administration has a mailbox setup. Then make a new mailbox call the same as the one you need to restore. THE NAME MUST BE EXACTLY THE SAME AS IT ON THE BACKUP TAPE!! NO EXTRA SPACES ETC. Then create mail profiles on the server for the exchange admin mailbox and each mailbox your want to restore. Through Outlook you need to able to enter each mail account logged on as your Exchange Admin account. Then check that you can send and recieve mail to and from your Exchange Admin mailbox and the mailboxes to restore. All this is to show that the Exchange Admin has full access to all the mailboxes. Now restore!!
