I have a customer that wants me to replace the teflon roller in his LaserJet 4 printer instead of the whole fuser. I can't seem to get past the plastic piece without breaking it. Can anyone give me any ideas on how to remove the old roller?

Simple answer is! You Don't. Taking them apart is really easy, getting them back together again is a different matter, in addition, you have to be really careful in handling the Halgon lamp inside, as any oils or contamination, can cause hot spots and the thing burns out and its back to square one.

The complete fuser assy and/or service kit is not that exspensive.

I dont think you could order the teflon roller anyway...

(they should upgrade anyway)

Are they paying you by the hour? And how many hours are they willing to pay before they realize that the time they save installing a maintanance kit will save them money.

You can buy just the hot roller, and these fusers usually take about an hour to rebuild, if you completely go through them piece by piece. They are pretty easy to do, but that first plastic cover is a pain. There are acyually 6 little clips that hold it on, you can just see them throught the 3 slits on the top and bottom on the metal frame. If you get a small screwdriver, going in from a top slit, you want to push the bottom clip, and go in from the bottom, to push the top clip. Start at one side and work your way across. Because these are older products, the clips will most likely break if you are not extremely careful. Once that main cover is off, the rest is easy.

The part number for the heat roller is: RB1-2263-000CN for the LaserJet 4, & RB1-3516-000CN if it's a LaserJet 4+ or 5. It's not really cost effective to rebuild these as our cost on these fusers are $85 for LJ4 and $95 for the LJ4+/5. Our hourly rate is $95, so the customer does actually save money if I just sell them a fuser, and it's saves me time, since they are so easy to install.
