How do I rename a NT 4.0 Server (BDC) properly

I had a NT 4.0 BDC that was named SCORE. I shut down SCORE and replaced it with a BDC named SCORE1. I had SCORE1 join the domain and all was good.

I decided to rename the new SCORE1 server back to SCORE. I changed the name of SCORE1 to SCORE and rebooted. Now SCORE shows up as 'greyed out' in server manager. SCORE appears fine in Network Neighborhood but it wont replicate with the PDC now. I can access it shares etc. etc. but I have a feeling I did the name change wrong.

I think I need to shut it down and using server manager remove the servers SCORE and SCORE1 from the domain. Then reboot the new SCORE server????...any ideas? I want SCORE to join the domain properly. How should I do this?

Thanks.

Remember changing the name of your computer/server doesnt change the SID.

There's a cool program called newsid that you can run to generate a new sid for the server and update everything on the server that uses the sid. Try removing SCORE1 from the domain and then running newsid which will then reboot. Just to be on the safe side, have it not connected to the network when it comes back up--just log on to the local machine. Go into network properties and make it a member of a workgroup, not of the domain. Then change the name, then have it try to join the domain again (with reboots in between each step). You may also need to add it to the domain from the domain as well to avoid trust relationship errors.
This may be overkill but I just did something like this with an NT server yesterday so I'm pretty sure it will work.

Unfortunately, pepper, you can't take a BDC off the domain, nor can you make it a member of a workgroup. I would try this:

Take the server down.

While it is down, use Server Manager on another machine to remove it's account from the domain, and then re-add it.

Server manager will display it as "NT 4.0 Workstation or Server" until the server comes back up and uses the account.

Bring the server back up and log on to the domain. They should resynchronize.
