Ever since I upgraded to VMWare 10, I occasionally notice that the VM has taken a random drive letter to assign itself. This is a problem because my H drive, an external WD MyBook, is mapped to some programs that require data on that drive. I am 99% sure that this mysterious CD drive that shows up in Windows Explorer is virtual, as I also see D/E for my actual CD\DVD drives, and clicking on the H drive says there is no disc in it. I have gone into VMWare and configured the virtual CD drives to use D, instead of 'auto' for the three virtual environments I have but Explorer still says there is an H drive in existence. Disk Manager does not see any H drive, but that letter is not available when I right click on the external and attempt to change the drive letter. I also checked the Mounted Devices listing in the registry, but H is not there either.
Any ideas on how to delete that virtual CD drive so I can reclaim the H for my external drive?? I've run out of ideas. :-(

Many thanks,
S-guy

Don't quite understand. Is this what you are saying

Originally
Host H (CD) = VM D
Host H (DVD) = VM E

The H drive is set to Connected & Connect at PowerOn.
Connection is set to Use Physical drive (H:)

What are the three virtual environments? You're only describing one. You've changed it to

Host D = VM D?
Host Disk Manager cannot see H.

If the above is not what you are describing, then please re-post.

This is a VMWare and/or OS issue, definitely not hardware.

For VMWare:

If you're using Windows 7, you might try:

Or whatever Windows OS you're using:
