I have tried the trace in both Corel and Illustrator and end up adjusting the ankers to shape the object correctly. Is this how it's done or is there an easier way?
It depends on the quality and resolution of your scan. Also on the settings of tracing program. Corel Trace hase quite good options and good results, you have to improvize with these settings a little. Anyway you probably wont avoid some manual final touch.. ...........................Mtj
This is what I like to do, if you have Photshop, create a clipping path around the logo. Save then Export the paths to Illustrator this creates a Illustrator file that you can edit. This works great. Let me know if you need more info.
Why use Photoshop? Why not use the Pen Tool in Illustrator to create a path around the logo? Just remember to add a new layer to the logo file once it is opened in AI, lock the logo layer and use the Pen Tool to trace around the logo on a new layer (or several layers if the logo is complex). You can turn the logo layer on and off to see how you are progressing and which bits you've missed, and then once it is done, delete the original logo layer.
I perfer Eggles meathod. I always clean up and straighten the image in photoshop then place it linked in illustrator. I always fade and lock the layer with the placed file on it. Then I create a new layer and ctrl+click on the eyeball for the new layer switching only it to wireframe mode. Then I just worry about getting all the shapes drawn before I do any coloring. Remember you can shift+click with the eyedropper on a placed image to sample its color. Then I usually add one more layer for any text because of how hard it is to selects stuff near text objects. BEHOLD! As Steve Jobs introduces us the latest in desk-lamp technology!
But by default, Illustrator uses a lo-res preview for linked images, whereas embedded images are placed at full resolution. Of course, this can be switched off in preferences...
I trace around the logo/image with the pencil tool using outlines only, no fill, and once I have the shape right I delete the underlying original picture, and fill in the colours.
