how do I re-format my existing movie?

I have an existing movie that is 770 pixels wide and I want to re-format to 1200 wide. When I go to "modify>movie" and change to 1200 pixels, flash places my entire movie on the left side of the stage. I want it centered so all my text, pics, etc., stay centered. I only want to add some solid bitmaps on each side of the existing stage so when a viewer has a wider monitor, the stage color will extend to the edges of the monitor.
