How do I permenantly change my $PATH?

I used
PATH=/usr.....
but when I logged out then logged backing my changes werent reflected.

Got any tips?

Depending on your shell you will need to place it on your
.profile
.login

Note that you may not have authority to do this if this is not your own machine.

Its my own machine.

How is .bash_profile different from just profile?

I know I can do it for my login in .profile, but how do I change it serverwide?

Type
Code:
info bash bash features
and look for the "Startup Files" section; read it.

You did ask for "MY $PATH", not my system wide.

bash_profile is for bash shell.

.profile is for the old and standard shell.
.login is for csh (if I'm not wrong).

/etc/profile would do it for normal shell.

Not sure for bash, but man bash should give you the details.

and you don't mention the OS version / make. This can affect the way to get the information and how to set it up.
