Hello to all,

Is there a way that I can organize my computers in Active Directory (or anywhere else) into groups so that they all apperar in their respective groups when navigating the network even if they are all contained in one domain?

For example in my Domain ARCHDOM I want to separate the computers into two groups: ACCOUNTS and INSURANCE so that when I navigate the network I can see both these groups when I go into the ARCHDOM domain.

Thanks
Liam

Create OUs for ACCOUNTS and INSURANCE. Then create an OU in each for Workstations. Move your computer accounts into the respecitve Workstations OU.

You can do the same for the Users to help seperate them as well.

There are two major ways to organize AD, one is to mimic the org chart the other mimics the physical layout, sometimes a combination of the two is done.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Markdmac's suggestion is right in organizing these OU's. However, if I'm reading you question right my answer would be no. I don't believe there is a way to organize these computers in containers or directories to make browsing the computer objects on the network correspond to your desired view.

I guess it might be possible to make use of attributes in AD, but you would probably need to do some heavy lifting trying to find/write and interface to give you the desired result.

Hope This Helps,

Good Luck!

Hmm, I didn't get that from the first time I read the question but I think you are correct monstrjta.

Liam, are you looking to organize these in ADUC or in Windows Explorer? My post was with the idea that you wanted to organize in ADUC.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thank you for the tips guys.

With respect to what markdmac asked in his last post: My intention was to reorganize them in ADUC so that the structure change would be reflected in explorer. However based on what you guys have wrote it seems like this is not possible. I will just have to stick with the Organizational Units.

Thanks
Liam
