How do I force a new tab in ie7? Instead of opening a whole new window, opening a new tab is a lot cleaner.

Thanks,

Steve

Why do you want to force something upon the user? What happens if I wanted it to open in a new window or the same window? I should have the choice.

Thanks for the response, it did not answer my question but it was helpful to know the process of asking a right question.

My reasoning behind opening a new window is to keep the user in the website while I present the content of the hyperlink that is not related to the main website. I am currently using “PARENT=_Blank” to open a new window but I was curious about opening a new tab instead.

I do not have to worry about IE version because I know all our computers are using IE7. I also understand about giving the user the choice to open the site in the way the user wants to but this is assuming that the user knows how to.

Thanks again,

Steve

IMR (in my research)

i found that what you would like to do at this point is not an option. It would take adjustments on the part of W3C and the doctype to accomplish this, and even though IE and firefox (maybe others) have this functionality, making an attribute for a hyperlink to target a new tab, is platform dependent and i dont see it being implemented.

If developers were able to access this "feature" im certain popups and adware would be targeted there too, and i personally dont want that to happen!

until that day, teach your users to ctrl click the link, or somehow emulate the ctrl key being pressed when clicked.

Good luck!

Even if you emulate the control button being pressed, this may still open in a new window as it is down to the user's browser settings as to what clicking a new link does.

Most users know how to open a new window/tab and even if they don't they probably know how to use a back button or how to get to your site.

If you force something upon them, they may leave. If you give them the option, they are more likely to stay.

Thanks adamroof for putting it in prospective. I did not look at the security implications of forcing to open a browser tab.

Opening a new window is not a bad idea after all.

Thanks for everyone's response.

It's a worse idea than just giving the user the option though.
