how do i make use of my USB modem to connect

1)i have redhat linux 7.2. and i use KDE
2)my modem serial number is HP UM9800-U.

i dont think i have to modify my kernel as it was said at

http://www.linux-usb.org/SpeedTouch/howto.html,

because i think i have plug and play enabled, this i am saying because when ever i connect the modem and see the hardware listing i can see some information and when i unplug the modem the info is gone.
3) i have downloaded the required drivers
slmdm-2.04-00_20mdk.i386
slmdm-usb-2.04-00_20mdk.i386

4) i have installed the same
but when i try running the program as mentioned in the readme file it fails.

since it failed i thought what i am doing is wrong and that is why i posted this question. is there any other solution for my problem.
