What is the best way to check and make sure that my files were indeed backed up?

I have a job that spans 3 tapes, and I want make sure that the files are definitely on the media, is there a way to do a scan of the actual media to check? What is the preferred way?

Yes, you can use the scan option in the manager menu / utiliites / Scan... Goto the scan options / Log and choose log activity which will give a detailed list of files that was backed up...

You could always do test restores?? -----------------------------------------------------

With ArcServe, test restores are the only way to make sure you have a good backup. In the end, that is what is going to matter.

I have had ArcServe say that backups are good, only to learn that they were not when I tried to restore something.

That's why this isn't very good software. I would much rather have it report a backup as "bad" when it is actually good than the other way around.

In the backup options/ verification choose choose compare backup media to Disk ....

This shuld help you ...

Comparing is ok, but it won't tell you if the files have been backed up correctly.

For example, just say your server was backing up long filenames as 8.3 filenames - you wouldn't find out until you had to restore a file that there was a problem. You can also check this in the Arcserve database. You could go through the motions of doing a restore on the Arcserve Manager without actually doing it because the filenames will be written to the database as they were backed up (ie. same filename as they are on the server). -----------------------------------------------------

HI,

You could set the "Log all Activity" option in the job options. This will give you a complete list of the files being backed up.

Cheers
