How do I make Opportunity User fields number-based?

I'm trying to customize Opportunity fields in my database and for reports. The standard sales columns of "price" and "cost" are of no use to me because I am a car salesman and my dealership tracks that part. I want to track my gross profit and commissions. I customized two of the user fields under opportunity for this, but they are character-based and not number-based. That means I can't total them in reports like I need to.

There is a drop-down menu where I could select something besides character, but it is greyed out. What can I do to make this selectable? Is there some prohibition in the application that won't allow me to make this change? If so, is there a work-around?

Thanks!

Sorry, I just now saw your request for full build. It's 10.0.0.182, Hotfix 1. I just downloaded it this morning.
