...this can be done in both illustrator or photoshop using masks...

...as you have posted in the illustrator forum i will give you the illustrator method...

...you need to use an opacity mask, these are created using the transparency palette...

1. file > place graphic

2. draw a box above the graphic and fill with a black to white gradient, black will hide the image, white will show. So in you example you need white at the top fading to black at the bottom

3. select both graphic and black to white gradient

4. select the transparency palette flyout menu (arrow top right of palette), in the list of options choose "make opacity mask"

5. with object still selected, you will see in the transparency palette two previews (ensure the palette is fully extended to see them). The right preview is the gradient mask, the left is the image.

6. select the right gradient mask, you will notice the layers palette changes to <Opacity Mask>. In the gradient palette you can now adjust the gradient of the mask to customize, you can also make the gradient box bigger by dragging the selection handles on the artboard to ensure the mask covers the whole picture.

7. when adjusting the gradient of the mask you will want to move the middle slider (diamond shape) toward the black side, and move the black slider just inside slightly.

8. select the left hand preview in the transparency palette to return to the actual layers of your artwork
