I need to put a spot color logo on the cover of a publication. I would like to have the logo lie over a grayscale photo. The problem is that I can't figure out a way to remove the white background from the logo. What should I do?

I'm presuming you're going to print on this, right? The technique you use depends on what software you're using.

Two main techniques are:

1: Placing the logo over the grayscale image in a page layout app, such as QuarkXPress or InDesign.

or

2: Placing the spot color logo over the grayscale image in Photoshop.

If you go for (1), then clipping paths is probably best. Select the pen tool, and in the options at the top, make sure Paths is selected rather than Shape Layers (it's usually the second button after the drop down menu; hold the mouse over each button until a tooltip appears if you're not sure). Draw a closed path around the logo (ie, make sure the end point is the same as the start point), then open the Paths palette (Window > Paths). In the flyout menu, choose Save Path (click OK), then Clipping Path (choose your path then click OK). Save as an EPS, and place into your DTP document.

The second option (doing it all in Photoshop) is a bit tricky because it can cause problems at repro if your printer can't handle spot channels. One way of doing it is this (assuming the logo is a single color):

1: Open your logo and convert it to grayscale.
2: Select All and Copy.
3: Open your other file, and open the channels palette (Window > Channels)
4: In the Channels palette flyout menu, choose "New Spot Channel"
5: Pick your spot color and click OK.
6: Paste.
7: Use the eraser or a white brush to delete areas in your logo.
8: The underlying photo is showing through, so select that channel, and paint in white under the logo.

It's messy, but it might do the trick for you.
