How do I make a 'loading' display, while animations load??

hi.
I have a fairly bulky website, somposed largely of big animations.
despite the comments telling me I should reduce the file sizes 9which I will do) I would like to know if there's a way of making a 'loading' display, perhaps a percentage bar in the middle of the page, which tells the user, how long before the page i fully loaded and ready for use.
I've seen it done on lots of other websites, but don't know enough about flash to create one.
ANY tips would be geatly appreciated.
