I'm a windows NT administrator who needs to learn some basic administration for Solaris. I've used Solaris workstations before, but only as a user.

So I just acquired a used Sun Ultra 5 with a fresh installation of Solaris 9. It boots up fine, but I can't figure out how to login to this "new" system. I assume that I need a beginning id and password for superuser, and from there I can customize authentication by adding my own users. I scoured Sun's documentation, but I just can't find how to accomplish the initial login.

Try user root without password. If it does not work, boot from the Solaris CD (boot cdrom -s) single user. Mount /etc (check vfstab for device) and the edit shadow to delete root password (second field). then do passwd and enter the new password and then reboot the system. Too bad I.T. is not cash business
