I HAVE A DELL POWEREDGE 2500 SYSTEM WHICH KEEPS FAILING
ALMOST NIGHTLY. I DID A DIAG ON THE EQUIPMENT AND IT
COMPLETES WITH NO ERRORS. I RUN BACKUP EXEC. 8.5
NIGHTLY AND I NOTICED THAT SOMEONE MENTIONED THAT
PROBLEMS OCCURED WHEN THE BACKUP UNIT IS ATTACHED
TO THE RAID CONTROLLER. HOW DO I FIND OUT IF THIS IS
THE PROBLEM I AM HAVING.

ALSO, DOES THE BACKUP SYSTEM WRITE A LOG TO "SYS"
WHEN IT HAS COMPLETED THE BACKUP, I WAS THINKING
THAT MAYBE I DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH DISK SPACE FOR
THIS STEP.

MY LAST QUESTION IS: IF I TYPE "PURGE SERV1_SYS:" AT
THE PROMPT WILL IT REMOVE ALL DELETED FILES ON
THE SYSTEM AND GIVE ME MORE ROOM?

THANK YOU.

Hi ScotsLass,

The way I understand it, you should not have your tape drive connected to a controller which has hard drives connected to it. I work for an Integrator, when we build a server, we set them up with a tape drive connected to it's own controller.

I'n not sure what log your are looking for. The logs can be viewed throught the BE Manager.

Puging a volume is done from a workstation and there are a few ways to do it. You need to have sufficient rights to the volume (Admin Equivalent).
From a DOS window, at a drive mapped to the root od SYS (I.E. F:\) type the following: Purge /all.

Or in Windows Explorer, right mouce click on a drive mapped to the root of SYS and choose Purge. Purge both SYS and it's subdirectories.

Thanks for the info, Lou0686. I did not do my backup last night at 8PM,
I changed the schedule to 7AM this morning. This way I can see what
is going on because nobody is here at midnight. Would you by any
chance know how to uninstall and reinstall BackupExec.
